Amazon Sustainability Accelerator
Coffee Based selected as one of nine European winners of the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator
Coffee Based has been selected as one of the winners of the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator 2026. Chosen from more than 700 applications from across Europe, the company is one of nine sustainable businesses invited to participate in Amazon’s international accelerator programme.
Coffee Based develops and produces reusable products with coffee waste such as coffee grounds and silverskin, the thin skin released during the roasting of coffee beans. Through these products, the company demonstrates that the value of coffee does not end after a single cup, but can be carried forward into premium everyday products.
The selection by Amazon is an important international recognition of Coffee Based’s mission: unlocking the value of the millions of kilograms of coffee grounds generated every year.
““There is something beautifully simple about drinking coffee from a cup made from coffee,” says Lisanne Addink. “But it is more than just poetry: over a four-year period, reusable Coffee Based Cups generate more than 70% less CO₂ emissions than paper cups. They do not just replace single-use cups; coffee simply tastes better when you drink it from a beautiful cup.”
Coffee Based has already sold more than one million products to business customers. Participation in the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator will help the company take its next steps: expanding across Europe, growing its sales channels, and exploring opportunities to reach consumers directly.
Don't throw coffee away.
Through the Coffee Recycle Service, Coffee Based collects coffee grounds from businesses across the Netherlands. The coffee grounds are collected separately, processed, and transformed into new products. As part of the service, customers receive 50% of their subscription fee back as credit towards Coffee Based products. This allows companies to see their own coffee grounds return as tangible circular products, such as coffee cups, lamps, or corporate gifts.
Through the visibility generated by the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator, Coffee Based hopes to encourage Dutch businesses to reconsider what happens to their coffee grounds. “Many companies are still throwing away valuable resources every day,” says Remco Addink of Coffee Based. “We invite organisations that are still disposing of their coffee grounds as residual waste to get in touch with us and explore how they can give this valuable material a second life.”
Call for resellers
In addition to companies looking to recycle their coffee grounds, Coffee Based is seeking resellers and partners interested in offering Coffee Based products to their customers.
“Our products tell a story that people instantly understand,” says Lisanne Addink. “You can see, feel and even smell the coffee, but in a new and useful form. We are looking for partners who want to help us share that story.”
The product range includes promotional products, interior items, and products suitable for retail.
100 free cups
As part of the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator, Coffee Based is also exploring which of its products are suitable for direct-to-consumer sales. The initial focus will be on its reusable coffee cups.
To better understand where and how consumers would use the cups, Coffee Based is launching an Instagram campaign. The company is giving away 100 Coffee Based Cup gift sets, each worth €14.95. Consumers interested in testing a cup can follow @coffeebasednl on Instagram and send a direct message to apply.
Coffee Based wants to discover how consumers would use the cups in their daily lives: at home, in the office, during outdoor adventures in a camper van, tent, or boat, or perhaps as a sustainable gift for someone else.
“The Coffee Based Cup is already widely used in large offices in the Netherlands and abroad as a replacement for single-use cups,” says Remco Addink. “But we are curious to see how consumers would use it. If people view it as the ideal cup for holidays because it is lightweight and unbreakable, that calls for different sales channels and packaging than if it is primarily seen as a sustainable gift. We want to build a community that helps us think along and shape the future of the product.”
